Sainsburys to offer video streaming service

Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s is launching its very own video streaming service via its onine media portal, Sainsbury’s Entertainment.

Not content with selling milk, courgettes and Taste The Difference Moroccan Spiced Houmous (other products also available) Sainsbury’s is moving into the Video on Demand business. Sainsbury’s Entertainment is the supermarket’s online storefront for flogging DVDs, games and music and later this year it will become the web hub for Sainsbury’s new streaming movies.

After its web-only launch, Sainsbury’s plans to roll the service out to consoles, mobile devices and smart TVs. The movie and TV content will be supplied in partnership with Rovi and the plan is to offer streaming copies of movies as soon as they are released on DVD and Blu-ray.

With Tesco taking a major stake in Blinkbox, are we about to see other supermarkets trying the same trick? Kwik-Save Direct-to-video Classics, anyone?
